Painter, printmaker, illustrator and poet, Rudolf Helmut Sauter was born in 1895, the son of the Bavarian portrait painter, Professor George Sauter and Lilian Galsworthy, daughter of the writer, John Galsworthy. Rudolph studied in London and, like his father, in Munich. With strong literary interests, he joined PEN, the writers’ club and illustrated the definitive version of works by John.
